Introducing – Where I Write!

Where I Write – Sara Ackerman

For the first four years of my novel writing life, I sat on my tiny cottage porch, surrounded by trees and birdsong, and wrote every morning, rain or shine.

Since then, I’ve relocated from Oahu’s North Shore to the Big Island and moved around a bit before we settled in our home.  Now I write in my living room, dining room, or porch. Waimea is upcountry and it’s cool and green and gorgeous, but now I have a lot more indoor writing days.

I always need to be by a window or outside if possible.  I’m not sure why, but maybe it makes me feel like I’m still part of the world and not missing out on a beautiful day.  Every now and then I go to Waimea Coffee Co., a quaint little shop nearby with the best local coffee and food.  I sit on the porch there and try to focus, which can sometimes be a challenge in such a small town.  Writing can be so solitary and lonely, so I enjoy getting out and about and mixing it up a bit.  Setting is important to me, in my life and in my writing, so I take care to have a comfy and inspiring place to write.

My porch on Oahu where I wrote Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers.

Another beautiful porch I was lucky to live at for a while.

This was the view from our place in Kona. Writing here was a challenge!

This is where I write now, either on the couch, in the dining room, or on the table outside when it’s not cold and windy.

And here are the mountains outside that are so beautiful, I can watch them all day.

Sara Ackerman

Born and raised in Hawaii, Sara Ackerman studied journalism and later earned graduate degrees in psychology and Chinese medicine.  Prior to practicing acupuncture, she worked as a high school counselor and teacher on the famed north shore of Oahu, where surf often took precedence over school.  She is the author of six novels with several more itching to be written.  She blames Hawaii for her addiction to writing, and sees no end to its untapped stories.

A few of her favorite things, in no particular order – hiking, homemade pizza, a good thunderstorm, stargazing, books, craft beer, her wonderful boyfriend, surfing, mountain streams, her friends, and animals.  In fact, animals inhabit all of her novels in some way, shape or form – dogs, donkeys, sea turtles, a featherless chicken, endangered Hawaiian crows, horses, and even a lion.  When she’s not writing or practicing acupuncture, you’ll find her in the mountains or in the ocean, which is where most of her inspiration happens.
